MULTI-DIMENSIONAL MEDICINE

... the next Era of Medicine

For decades, traditional Western medicine has been challenging itself to redevelop its focus from fixing injury or disease to promoting health. It has waxed and waned on this topic. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) established the Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) to 1) help understand the advantages of non-traditional approaches, 2) try to scientifically explain some of the successes of Eastern medicine.

Many Eastern Medicine techniques have not just emerged, but also merged, collaboratively with Western techniques. Integrative Medicine has continued development in Western culture with greater and greater acceptance by not only patients/clients, but also clinicians. But there is more to integrative medicine than just collaboration between Eastern and Western Medicine.

As multi-disciplinary science and many forms of medicine merge and collaborate, a unique understanding is developing. Physiological Psychology was among the first integrative medical approaches (late 1500's) with its foundation in physics and physiology, creating the foundation of a scientific psychology (now known as neuroscience). This path contributed to scientific fields such as Psycho-Neuro-Immunology, Functional Neuroscience and even influenced approaches to medicine with the development of the BioPsychoSocial model by recognizing that function of the body and the mind is a multi-directional relationship

Xtreme Vet® is uniquely built on this Multi-Dimensional perspective to Health (i.e., mental, physical, medical, social) Performance (e.g., affective/emotion, behavioral, cognitive) and Medicine.

Mental health

Mental health is often not considered in the diagnosis, treatment or even well-being of patients in the veterinary field, unless it is drastically affected by disease or illness. But, especially in performance animals, healthy mental function (e.g., sensation, perception, planning, executing) is critical. Xtreme Vet® strives to not only include mental well-being as an important element of health, but also as a key element of diagnostic strategy, treatment and recovery. XtremeVet® is uniquely qualified and experienced in mutli-directional relationships between physiology and physiopsychology.

Physical health

Physical health of any animal is perhaps the most familiar element of a balanced individual. For millennia, the human species has strived to learn and apply more and more knowledge to increase our quality of life through physical health, early diagnostic strategies, state-of-the-art treatments, etc. Xtreme Vet® uses an integrative approach (in strategy and discipline) to diagnose, treat and assess physical health and recovery.

Medical health

Medical health refers to the status of an individual's biological structure and physiological function. It is an aspect of health with which we are perhaps most familiar. But it goes beyond the identification/diagnosis of injury, illness or disease. Medical health also refers to the body's ability to function. This includes each organ system, the collaboration between them, and the body as a whole. Xtreme Vet® incorporates a deep understand of both biological structure and physiological function in a complex, medical approach to optimize the multi-dimensional relationship between body and systems.

Social health

Social health is rarely considered in diagnosis or treatment in veterinary medicine. While “the herd” or “pack” is often used to describe behaviors, the social aspect of the herd’s/pack’s impact on health is rarely considered. Yet decades of research demonstrate that social well-being has significant effect on behavior patterns, phsyiopsychological and physical well-being. Even independent species like cats, are affected by social health. Xtreme Vet® not only takes into consideration the social health of patients, but takes advantage of it as both a diagnostic and treatment strategy.
